I recently learnt about all the art that has been stolen from the soil of Africa. I knew art was stolen, but I recently learnt how much art was stolen. Over 1 billion tonnes.
Hidden from sight I might add, completely hidden. We get to see a few and that often goes unquestioned. As I am tempted to consider leaving the past in the past as I twist in my chair from upset at this reality, I have been considering what will be next for African Art in general.
The future.
What will the future of African art look like without the scaly tentacles of Neo-colonialism. What are we going to create that reflects our lived experiences that will serve as memorabilia for future generations? Objects that can be a source of pride?
We did it in the past and we can do it again. Art was stolen but the real art lives within us, you and I. We must reach deep within our souls to reveal the truth that has been concealed but nothing can be concealed forever.
